Material Comparison

Ornamental Aluminum vs. Wrought Iron

This is the question we get asked most. Wrought iron is the traditional material — heavy, extremely strong, and genuinely timeless. It costs more and needs some maintenance in wet climates to prevent rust, but properly maintained it’s nearly indestructible with a presence aluminum can’t match.

Ornamental aluminum is the more practical choice for most residential projects — lighter, rust-proof by nature, and less expensive. Powder-coated and mimicking wrought iron closely, it’s often the smarter long-term choice for the Pacific Northwest: the look without the rust risk.

Wrought Iron — The Genuine Article

Unmatched weight and presence. If you want the real thing and you’re committed to maintaining it, nothing compares.

Aluminum — Rust-Proof

Powder-coated, rust-proof by nature, and lower cost. The look of wrought iron without the rust risk in our wet climate.

Straight Guidance

We’ll be honest about which fits your situation. Want the genuine article and willing to maintain it? Iron. Want the look with less upkeep? Aluminum.

Strong Security

Vertical bars are hard to climb, the construction can’t be kicked through, and the open design lets you see who’s approaching.

Design Styles

Styles We Install

The right choice depends on the architecture of your home and your personal taste. We also custom-configure panel heights, spacing, and post styles.

01

Flat Top

Clean horizontal line across the top — works well with modern and contemporary homes.

02

Spear Top (Finial)

The traditional pointed top adds a classic formal look. One of the most popular choices in established neighborhoods.

03

Arched Sections

Fence panels that arch upward between posts — common on estate and formal residential properties.

04

Traditional Picket

Uniform spacing with decorative post caps — suits craftsman and colonial-style homes.

Maintenance & Gates

Powder-coated aluminum doesn’t rot, warp, or need repainting — an occasional rinse keeps it sharp. Wrought iron needs periodic touch-up painting if the coating chips, but with that basic care it outlasts almost anything on your property. And a fence is only as good as its gate — we design and install custom single, double, and automated gates that swing true, latch securely, and look like they belong.

Ornamental Iron FAQ

Does wrought iron fence rust in Washington’s wet climate?

It can, if the protective coating is damaged and left unaddressed. Raw iron oxidizes when exposed to moisture and oxygen — that’s basic chemistry. However, quality wrought iron fence is painted or powder-coated from the factory, which prevents rust as long as the coating stays intact. In Washington’s climate, we recommend inspecting the fence once a year and touching up any chips or scratches with rust-inhibiting paint before they spread. With that basic care, a wrought iron fence can last 50 years or more. If rust maintenance concerns you, ornamental aluminum is a smarter fit for this region — it looks nearly identical and won’t rust at all.

What’s the difference between ornamental and wrought iron?

“Ornamental fence” is a category that includes both wrought iron and aluminum fencing with a traditional vertical bar design. “Wrought iron” refers specifically to the material — actual iron that has been worked and shaped. In modern fencing, true wrought iron is less common; most iron-look fencing is either mild steel or aluminum. When contractors say “wrought iron fence,” they often mean a steel or aluminum ornamental fence with that classic look. We’ll always be clear with you about what material we’re quoting so there’s no confusion.

Is ornamental fence good for security?

Yes — ornamental fence is one of the better security options available. The vertical bars are difficult to climb compared to a solid panel fence, the steel or iron construction can’t be kicked through, and the open design means you can see who’s approaching your property. For pool safety, it meets most code requirements for pool barriers. For front yard perimeters and driveway entries, it’s a strong deterrent. It’s not the right choice if your primary goal is privacy, but for visible deterrence and physical security, it performs well.
