Best Fence Types for Dogs
Chain Link Fence
Chain link is one of the most popular choices for dog owners. It’s strong, difficult to push through, and you can see your dog at all times. For diggers, a bottom rail or buried mesh can prevent escape. Chain link starts at $33/LF — contact us for a quote specific to your yard.
Best for: active dogs, large breeds, dog runs, properties where visibility matters.
Privacy Fence (Wood or Vinyl)
A solid privacy fence blocks your dog’s view of the street, neighbors, and other animals. For dogs that bark at everything they see or get agitated by visual stimulation, a privacy fence can reduce reactive behavior significantly.
Best for: reactive dogs, dogs that bark at passersby, neighborhoods with close-together houses.
Cedar Fence
A cedar privacy fence is the most common dog fence we install. It provides full containment and privacy. Cedar starts at $37/LF. Board-on-board and full-panel styles eliminate gaps that small dogs might squeeze through.
Best for: most dog owners who want a good-looking fence that also contains their dogs.
Hog Wire Fence
Hog wire with a wood frame is a modern option that keeps dogs contained while maintaining visibility. The wire mesh panels are strong enough for most dogs, and the wood frame looks better than plain chain link. It’s popular on properties where owners want to see through the fence but still keep dogs in.
Best for: medium to large dogs, properties with views, homeowners who want a modern look.
Key Considerations for Dog Fences
Height
Most dogs are contained by a 6-foot fence. Some breeds — especially athletic ones like Huskies, German Shepherds, and Border Collies — can scale a 4-foot fence easily. If your dog is a jumper, go with 6 feet minimum.
Digging
Dogs that dig need a fence with a solution at the ground level. Options include burying the bottom of the fence several inches underground, installing a concrete footer, or adding a buried wire mesh apron. We can build any of these into your fence.
Gaps
Small dogs can squeeze through surprisingly tight spaces. Board-on-board fencing eliminates gaps between boards. For chain link, make sure the gauge is tight enough that small dogs can’t push through or get their heads stuck.
Gates
The gate is the weak point of any dog fence. Self-closing hinges and reliable latches are essential. We install gates with hardware designed to close and latch automatically, so a forgotten gate doesn’t become an open invitation. Learn about our gate options.
Metal and Ornamental Fencing for Dogs
Ornamental iron (metal starts at $45/LF) can work for dogs, but the spacing between pickets matters. Standard ornamental fencing has gaps that small dogs may fit through. For large dogs that don’t dig, ornamental iron provides excellent containment with a premium look. All prices require an individual quote.
