Cedar Privacy Fence
Cedar is the most popular privacy fence material in Washington. It’s naturally rot-resistant, it looks warm and natural, and it can be built in a variety of styles:
- Full panel — solid boards with no gaps. Maximum privacy.
- Board-on-board — overlapping boards that block sightlines from any angle while allowing some air flow.
- Horizontal — a modern, clean look with boards running horizontally instead of vertically.
- State-style — a traditional vertical board design that’s been the Pacific Northwest standard for decades.

Vinyl Privacy Fence
Vinyl privacy fencing gives you complete privacy with zero maintenance. No painting, no staining, no sealing. In Washington’s wet climate, that’s a significant advantage.
Vinyl panels are solid and tongue-and-groove, so there are no gaps. They’re available in white, tan, and gray. The look is clean and uniform, though it doesn’t have the natural warmth of wood.

How High Should a Privacy Fence Be?
Most privacy fences are 6 feet tall — that’s the standard height that blocks the view from a standing person at ground level. For properties with elevated neighbors, slopes, or second-story sightlines, 8-foot fencing may be needed for true privacy.
Check your local regulations before choosing a height. In many King County cities, 6-foot fences in rear and side yards don’t require a permit, but taller fences or front-yard fences often do. We can help you navigate permit requirements during your estimate.
Privacy Fence vs. Other Fence Types
Chain link provides a boundary but no privacy at all. Privacy slats can be added, but they’re not the same as a solid fence.
Ornamental iron is open by design — it’s built for appearance and security, not privacy.
Split rail and hog wire are open boundary fences. They work for containment and property lines but don’t block any views.
